Tzi became interested in performing after being cast as Buffalo Bill in an elementary school play of Annie Get Your Gun. He began his professional performing career as a theater performer in 1973. In 1975, he made his first outdoor theatrical appearance as the Monkey King in a Beijing opera titled Monkey King in the Yellow Stone King in Roosevelt State Park. Mako’s performance in Pacific Overtures had a significant effect on his acting career in the late 1970s.
Similarly, he appeared in numerous plays written by David Henry Hwang, including ROB, Yellow Face, Flowers Drum Song, and The Dance and the Railroad. Ma made his television debut in 1984 on The Cosby Show, an NBC comedy.
