He was given a scholarship at St Dunstan’s College, an independent public school in Catford, South London, but his mother couldn’t afford the uniform. He attended Brockley County Grammar School. He started his own company to finance a uniform, purchasing paraffin at the foot of the hill, carrying it up the mountain in an old pram, and selling it for a cent more at the top.
