Zaitsev was born in Ivanovo on March 2, 1938, to Mikhail Yakovlevich Zaitsev and Maria Ivanovna Zaitseva. His father was a victim of Joseph Stalin’s repressions and was imprisoned in one of Stalin’s camps, while his mother worked as a cleaner and laundress. He attended Ivanovo Secondary School No. 22 from 1945 until 1952.[4] Zaitsev was refused admission to an industrial academy, a theatrical school, and a pilot training school because his father was branded an enemy of the people by the state.
In 1952, he started his studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Ivanovo’s Faculty of Applied Arts, where he got interested in manufacturing and obtained the qualifications to become a textile artist. In 1956, he graduated from university with honors. He came to Moscow in 1956, realizing that working with textiles was his goal, and began studies at the Moscow Textile Institute, where he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in painting and design.

Career
During the Soviet period, Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin dominated clothes, and he was likened to other world-renowned fashion designers such as Christian Lacroix, Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Yves Saint Laurent. Zaitsev was seen to be capable of competing with Western designers; but, during the communist system, the only place outside of the USSR where Zaitsev could operate was Czechoslovakia. Alexandre Vassiliev, a Russian-born fashion historian and designer residing in Paris, claimed that “if he had had the opportunity to show his collections abroad, he would have most likely been a world-famous brand.” He started working as the creative director of the experimental technological garment factory Mosoblsovnarkhoza in March 1962, where he directed the manufacturing of women’s clothes for retail establishments in Moscow and the surrounding area.
Zaitsev appeared as a judge on Channel One’s TV program “Fashion Verdict” (Russian: одн pиовор) in 2007, where he passed judgment on participants’ fashion sense.Zaitsev revealed that he was attracted by traditional Turkmen clothes after visiting Ashgabat for the Turkmen Textile Exhibition in June 2008, and announced plans for a new collection that would feature traditional Turkmen components. The casual wear line will be made entirely of Turkmen cotton and will showcase the traditional Turkmen embroidery that piqued his interest. Death
Zaitsev died of gastrointestinal hemorrhage at a Shchyolkovo city hospital on April 30, 2023, at the age of 85. He previously had Parkinson’s disease, which left him largely paralyzed and with decreased capacity to communicate and move.
