Dervla Kirwan made her television début in 1990 on The Lilac Bus, with Stephanie Beacham, and in 1988 on Troubles, based on Maeve Binchy’s book. Her role as Bernadette Kennedy in the BBC Scotland drama A Time To Dance in 1991 was her significant breakthrough in her career, bringing her a lot of popularity and attention. She appeared in Casualty and The Good Sweetheart opposite Nicholas Lyndhurst.
Between 1996 and 1998, she played Assumpta Fitzgerald in Ballykissangle, which had 23 episodes. She reprised this character in The Vicar of Dibley, a British comedy, and notably in Father Ted.
