Chelsea Jane Winstanley was born in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand on January 30, 1976. She is the daughter of home renovator John Winstanley and psychotherapist Cherry Wilson. John James Winstanley (1905-1977), an ice cream vendor from Wigan, Lancashire, England, was Chelsea Winstanley’s paternal grandfather. Sophia Millerstone Rowe (nee MacDonald) (1914-1961) was Winstanley’s paternal grandmother. She was the daughter of James MacDonald and Caroline Creed of Inverness, Scotland. Kiritapu “Kitty” Wilson (nee Borell) was Winstanley’s maternal grandmother. Winstanley is descended from Ngati Ranginui and Ngai Te Rangi through her mother.
