Joyce Dewitt is an American actress best known for her portrayal of Janet Wood on the ABC sitcom Three’s Company. Dewitt began taking acting classes when she was in high school. She played Janet from 1977 to 1984 and later appeared in the comedy film Spring Fling, as well as in episodes of Finder of Lost Lovers, Pinky and the Brain, Cybill, and Living Single.

Joyce Anne Dewitt was born on April 23, 1949, in Wheeling, West Virginia, to Paul and Norma Dewitt. She grew up in the Indianapolis suburb of Speedway, Indiana.
She competed in speech and debate contests through the Indiana High School Forensic Association.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in theater from Ball State University, she began working on her master’s degree at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she graduated in 1974.
