Tom Joyner was born on November 23, 1949,r. He was born in the Alabama town of Tuskegee. Tom Joyner comes from a highly educated family. Oscar Joyner, his grandfather, was one of only three thousand black men practicing medicine in America at the time. His family is one of those who fully embrace their black culture and roots.
His parents were both graduates of institutes based on black traditions. His brother, Albert, and he were both graduates of Tuskegee Institute, also known as Tuskegee University, which is well-known for its black tradition. He graduated from the institute with a major in Sociology. He also had a strong musical interest, which led him to join a band while in college.
It was dubbed “The Commodores.” Lionel Richie was a school friend of Tom Joyner’s and a member of this band. This music venture, however, failed miserably, at least financially. At this point, Tom Joyner’s parents advised him to pursue a different career path, which he did. Tom Joyner has had two marriages, the first to Dora and the second to Donna Richardson. Career
Tom Joyner had already been involved in college radio but had never considered it as a career option. After his musical endeavors failed, he eventually decided to do it for a living. He began his radio career at a station in Montgomery, Alabama. Before moving to Chicago in 1978, he worked at several stations throughout the region. He got his first job in Chicago at WVON, but he soon left to work at a rival station, WBMX-FM. He did, however, leave in favor of another station, WJPC-AM. The owner of the black magazine “Jet and Ebony” owned this station.
Tom Joyner was offered two jobs at the same time in 1985. One was at a Dallas station, while the other was in Chicago. Interestingly, instead of picking one, Tom Joyner chose to take both, and he used to fly between the two cities every day. He did it for eight years in a row. His contract with ABC radio was signed in 1994. This was the first episode of “The Tom Joyner Morning Show,” his nationally syndicated show. His show featured a lineup of comedians and commentators who discussed topics such as news, sports, and entertainment.
He mostly played Rock and Blues music on his show. It also featured guests, and its sponsor, Southwest Airlines, gave away regular round-trip tickets to any destination served by the airline.
