Alan Dershowitz was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 1, 1938, to his father, Harry Dershowitz, the founder and president of the Young Israel Synagogue, and his mother, Claire Dershowitz. During his retirement, he was a co-owner of the Manhattan-based Merit Sales Company. His father had a strong sense of justice and often spoke about how Jews could defend the weak. In 1952, he started his first job on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
