Thor: Love and Thunder will be available on Disney+ on September 9 at 3 a.m. ET as part of Disney+ Day. The fourth film in the Thor series follows Thor as he gathers gods to face Gorr the God Butcher in the New Asgard period. It was released in theaters in July.
According to the film’s synopsis:
Thor enlists the support of Valkyrie, Korg, and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to combat Gorr the God Butcher, who wants to extinguish the gods.
Taika Waititi, who previously directed the prequel Thor: Ragnarok, directs the film. It stars Chris Hemsworth as Thunder God Thor, Christian Bale as God Butcher Gorr, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Russell Crowe as Zeus, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster as Mighty Thor. Waititi also plays Korg, a Kronan gladiator who befriends Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder’s critical reception after its July theatrical debut
On July 8, 2022, the film was released in cinemas in the United States. It was met with mixed reviews, including praise for Bale and Portman’s performances. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman said that, unlike Ragnarok, Thor: Love and Thunder maintained its novelty until the conclusion, despite beginning with a “more uncomfortable” opening act with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Gleiberman particularly praised the film’s antagonist, Gorr the God Butcher, and credited Waititi for keeping the picture “emotionally alive.”
Todd Gilchrist of the AV Club shared Gleiberman’s comments in his review, writing:
“Natalie Portman and (especially) Christian Bale contribute more than enough capital-A acting chops to Waititi’s loose, occasionally too-joyous but always visually adventurous adaptation of Jason Aaron’s stint on the Mighty Thor comic, in which (among other things) Portman’s Jane Foster gains the hero’s powers.”
He went on to say that Bale’s Gorr is one of the most intriguing and sympathetic Marvel antagonists since Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger in Black Panther. Thor: Love and Thunder have a 65% critics’ rating and a 77% audience rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. In terms of box office revenues, although the current picture grossed over $340 million in the United States, becoming the highest-grossing Thor film ever, it fell short of Thor: Ragnarok’s worldwide totals.

The post-credit sequence in the current release has promised Marvel fans another film based on Norse mythology about the superhero. However, Waititi was not kept up to date on the latest developments in the Thor series.
Waititi explained to Insider:
“That surprised me as well. I’m not kidding. I watched it in the theater and said to myself, ‘Oh, s**t. Really?’ ‘What?’ even Chris asked. But, of course, he’ll return. He’s the most interesting character. I mean, I may be prejudiced, but he’s the most entertaining to watch.”
Waititi has said that he would be interested in directing another Thor picture if Hemsworth stays with the property. According to recent rumours, Waititi has left the forthcoming Thor picture because of the lackluster reception to Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel has yet to confirm the news to fans.
