Chris Rock, an American comedian, received massive criticism on social media after making a provocative remark about Nicole Brown Simpson when explaining why he was denied an opportunity to host the Oscars next year, five months after his notorious physical incident with Will Smith. On August 28, during a gig in Phoenix, Arizona, the 57-year-old entertainer likened returning to host the 2023 Oscars to O.J. Simpson’s late wife Nicole Brown Simpson returning to the Italian restaurant where she was slain.
According to the Arizona Republic, the comic reportedly disclosed that he “profanely” declined a Super Bowl ad. After word of his purported joke spread, multiple social media users chastised the comic for his offensive quip.
O.J. Simpson’s second wife was Nicole Brown Simpson.
Nicole Brown Simpson was born on May 19, 1959, to an American father and a German mother. Her family migrated to California after she was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Nicole began working as a waiter at The Daisy in Beverly Hills when she was 18 years old. There, she met her future spouse, former NFL star O.J. Simpson. They began dating shortly after and fell in love. O.J. Simpson married Nicole Brown Simpson in 1985 after divorcing his first wife, Marguerite Whitley, in 1979. They have two children, a girl called Sydney and a boy named Justin. Their passion, however, was short-lived, and she filed for divorce alleging “irreconcilable disagreements.” According to many stories, OJ used to strike Nicole, and their friends used to assist the pair reconcile.
Nicole enjoyed supper with her family and friends at Mezzaluna restaurant on June 12, 1994, after seeing her daughter’s dancing performance. Her waiter buddy Ronald Goldman offered to drop off her mother’s sunglasses at Nicole’s house, which she had forgotten while departing. A few hours later, on June 13, the remains of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were discovered at the former’s Los Angeles home. Brown was stabbed seven times in the scalp, neck, and throat, almost decapitating her, according to an autopsy report.
When authorities went to O.J. Simpson’s residence to notify him, they discovered a bloody glove and a white Ford Bronco with blood on it. They subsequently discovered another glove on his property that was linked to the double homicide. OJ was not at home since he had traveled to Chicago. On June 17, the police ordered the former NFL star to surrender, but he left in another White Bronco.
O.J. surrendered after a low-speed chase and a short confrontation with police. He was found with a revolver, $9,000 in cash, a passport, and a false mustache. The murder trial of O.J. Simpson became one of the most prominent events in the United States, with the former NFL star defended by Robert Shapiro, Johnnie Cochran, and Kim Kardashian’s late father, Robert Kardashian. O.J. Simpson was acquitted in October 1995 after an eight-month heated trial. A judge awarded the Brown and Goldman families $33.5 million in compensatory damages in 1997, and O.J. was found “responsible” for the killings.
