Dejan Lovren is a Croatian professional footballer who plays as a center-back for Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Russian Premier League and for the Croatia national team. Lovren started his professional career with Dinamo Zagreb before joining Olympique Lyonnais in January 2010.

Dejan Lovren was born on July 5, 1989, in Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina (formerly SFR Yugoslavia) to Croatian parents, Silva and Sasa Lovren. Due to the Bosnian War, his parents fled Yugoslavia for Munich in 1992. Lovren was just three at the time. For the following seven years, the family resided in Munich, Germany, before returning to Croatia and settling in Karlovac, Croatia.

Back in Croatia, Lovren, who was approximately 10 years old at the time, first struggled to acclimate to life in his native country and cope academically because he struggled to grasp the Croatian language, but he quickly adjusted. Lovren recalls his time in Germany as a happy youngster who spoke flawless German, attended to school, and played for a little club.

Davor Lovren, Lovren’s younger brother, is also a professional football player. Dinamo Zagreb has loaned him to German club Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Career

• Dejan Lovren started his professional career with Dinamo Zagreb in 2004 after playing for two local teams, NK Ilovac and NK Karlovac. In May 2006, he made his Zagreb debut against NK Varteks Varadin in the Croatian First Football League.
• He was loaned to NK Inter Zaprei for two seasons in July of the same year. He featured in 50 league matches for NK Inter Zaprei, scoring one goal. Lovren returned to Dinamo when his loan expired, participating in 38 games and scoring three goals during the 2008-09 season. The next season, he appeared in all four of Dinamo’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers against Pyunik Yerevan and Red Bull Salzburg. In the game against Pyunik, he scored a header.
• Dejan signed a four-and-a-half year deal with French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais in 2010. The deal was for €8 million, with an additional €1.5 million in incentives. His debut for his new club came in January 2010 against AS Monaco in a 2-1 loss in the Coupe de France.
• In the same month, he made his Ligue 1 debut against PSG, which he won 2-1. Dejan Lovren played 90 minutes in both of his debut matches. He appeared in 10 games during the second half of the season, usually as a substitute. He did not participate in the UEFA Champions League that season since he had previously played for Dinamo Zagreb in the Croatian championship.
• Lovren’s playing time rose with the departures of Jean-Alain Boumsong and Mathieu (both defenders) in the 2010/2011 season, and he quickly established himself as the team’s regular starter. He has shown his versatility as a defender by playing right or left fullback. By the end of 2010, he had been named one of the world’s top 100 young players by the Spanish monthly sports magazine Don Balón.
• Dejan Lovren extended his contract with Olympique Lyonnais in January 2012, extending his tenure in France until 2016, however, he left Lyon the following year for Southampton on a four-year deal for £8.5 million. At the conclusion of his debut season, his name featured on Bloomberg Sports’ Power 50 list, and he was also designated the fifth-highest rated Premier League player, ranking 31st.
• In July 2014, he left Southampton for Liverpool, becoming the third Southampton player to join Liverpool during that transfer window, after Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert. He has stayed at Liverpool to this day, and in April 2017, Lovren signed a contract extension with the club that would keep him there until 2021.
• Lovren appeared in 54 games for different Croatian youth national teams, scoring six goals. He has been a member of the Croatian senior squad since August 2009, making 30 games and scoring two goals.

Anita, on the other hand, cheated on Dejan with an old acquaintance, Dario Torbic, whom she met when visiting their hometown of Zagreb in 2015. When she returned to England, she persuaded Dario to visit her, and they reconnected. Lovren was humiliated and saddened when he found out, but since he was devoted to maintaining his marriage and not losing his love of over a decade, he forgave, despite Anita’s request for a divorce. They ultimately worked out their differences and are still together. Lovren and Anita have two gorgeous children, Elena and Josip.
