Gary attended Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Missouri, for his senior year. Gary continued his education by enrolling in the University of Missouri, where he earned a social studies Bachelor’s degree in 1969. Gary also earned a master’s degree in education in 1971. Gary was Missouri’s wide receiver from 1966 through 1969. He participated in sports under Coach Dan Devine in his senior year.

Career
Gary Barnett’s stint as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Missouri under Coach Al Onofrio began in 1969 and lasted until 1971. Following graduation, he worked as a coach at Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, where he won conference championships and advanced to the semifinals in 1980 and 1981. He coached for 11 years, nine of them as the head coach.
Gary then took over as the head coach at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, but two years later, he moved to Colorado to serve as Bill McCartney’s assistant coach. He won his first and only national championship when he was the offensive coordinator for his team in the 1991 Orange Bowl.
Gary became the head coach of Northwestern in 1991, and after years of defeats, he led the team to its finest season. He coached them to their first Big Ten Conference championship since 1936 and their first appearance in the Rose Bowl in 1949. They made it to the Florida Citrus Bowl the following year. His induction into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame resulted from this. He spent eight seasons at Northwestern before joining Colorado.
Gary became the 22nd coach for Colorado. In 2001, he guided them to a conference championship and four Big 12 North crowns. He also directed the group to second place in the country.
