After graduating from St. John Bosco High School, he was chosen by the Milwaukee Brewers to take part in their 1991 draft. He declined the invitation, however, and enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology instead. Later, he became a member of the collegiate baseball team, which helped the group win the World Series in 1994.
