Frederick Steven Couples was born on October 3, 1959, in the Seattle neighborhood of Washington. When his grandparents moved from Italy, they changed the family name from Coppola to Couples, and his father worked as a groundskeeper in Seattle.

Couples began his golfing career in 1983, winning the first tournament. He also competed in major tournaments in 1984 and 1996, winning the second. Fred was the first American player to be ranked number one in the official World Golf Rankings in 1992.
He held the first position for only 16 weeks before moving on to the second position and being named Mr. Skins because he was the best player and won five Skins games. Couples was named the King of the Season after winning the PGA Championship at Shoal Creek Golf Club.

At the age of 46, Fred had won the Final for the second time, having previously won this title when he was 25 years old.
