Julie Andrews was born in Walton-on-Thames, England on October 1, 1935. Her father, Edward Charles Wells, was a metalwork and woodwork teacher, and her mother, Barbara Ward Wells. Her parents divorced, and she spent her childhood in Surrey with her father and brother, John. They live in the slums because her father has a low income. Julie began her education at Cone-Ripman School before transferring to Woodbrook School in Beckenham.
