Troy Smith was born on July 20, 1984, in Columbus, Ohio, and was raised by his mother and two brothers before moving to Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood. He was interested in football from a young age and played for the Glenville A’s as a running back and tight end.
He spent his first two years at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio, but after being hit in the head during a varsity basketball game, Smith was transferred to Glenville High School.
Ted Ginn coached him shortly after graduation, and Smith and Ginn went on to play together at Ohio State, where he was invited to play after his junior year.
