Chris Harris was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, on January 20, 1975. Ian Harris, his father, was an accountant, and Angela Wilding, his mother, was an autocross racer. His basic high school education is unknown, but he did attend Clifton College in Bristol.

Chris Harris began his career at Autocar, where he primarily performed mundane tasks.
