Career
Everything changed when she met Neil Giraldo, a hard-charging rock guitarist whose licks provided Benatar with the exact sound she was looking for. In 1979, Benatar released her debut album, In the Heat of the Night, with Giraldo as her backing band. The album was a smash hit, with two monster hit singles, “Heartbreaker” and “I Need a Lover.”
With her second album, Crimes of Passion released a year later, Benatar cemented her position as rock’s leading female vocalist. The album went platinum right away, thanks to three big singles: “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Treat Me Right,” and “You Better Run.” Benatar’s career grew throughout the decade. There were more albums and popular singles, such as “Love is a Battlefield” and “We Belong,” whose videos were heavily promoted on MTV.
Her status as an icon of the 1980s, however, did not translate well into the 1990s. While Benatar continued to release music, including albums such as Gravity’s Rainbow (1993) and Innamorata (1997), she struggled to match her earlier success.
Her family life also got in the way. Benatar married her guitarist, Neil Giraldo, in 1982. The couple has two daughters, Haley and Hana, and they maintain a strong partnership both on and off stage. Benatar, whose last album, Go, was released in 2003, has recently tapped into the nostalgia surrounding the 1980s. She continues to perform live, and in 2009 she embarked on a tour with another trailblazing female rock musician, Debbie Harry.
Benatar’s career has included 10 platinum albums, eight number one singles, and four Grammy awards.
