He was the U17 world champion in 2003, but he lost to Amir Khan in the junior championships in 2004. He also lost twice to his count countryman Luis Franco at featherweight and finished third in the nationals in 2004 at featherweight. He switched to lightweight in 2005 and had more success, winning the Cuban Championships from 2005 to 2008.
