Career
James began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of San Diego, from 2001 to 2003. Similarly, during his tenure, San Diego won the West Coast Conference Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2002–2003.
Furthermore, following his coaching stints with the Toreros, he began his professional basketball career with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003. As a result, he began as an assistant video coordinator in the summer of 2003 and was later promoted to assistant coach.
This coach spent seven seasons with the Spurs, helping them to two NBA championships in 2005 and 2007, before leaving to work with former Spurs assistant Monty Williams. Later, he worked as the Orlando Magic’s lead assistant under Jacque Vaughn.
