Jonathan Capehart, a well-known journalist, is happily married. Since their marriage on January 7, 2017, he has been in a married relationship with his spouse, Nick Schmit. Schmit, for those who don’t know, is a former State Department assistant head of protocol. Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder performed the couple’s wedding, and he allegedly halted throughout the ceremony to wipe his emotions.
“I don’t know how many marriages I’ve done,” Holder, who appeared startled at himself after leading the brief ceremony, added. “This is the first time I’ve ever cried as an officiant.”
Capehart and Schmit had known one other for about six years at the time of their wedding, and they had been engaged for eight months.
Jonathan Capehart Initially Refused to Date His Now-Husband
According to The New York Times, Jed Hastings, who is now married to Joe Solmonese, the former head of the Human Rights Campaign, which campaigns for LGBT rights, approached Capehart on a matching mission in spring 2010. Hastings informed the writer that his sister-in-law had a single relative, Schmit, who had lately relocated to Washington. However, since Capehart was seeing someone at the time, he promptly dismissed the notion.
Hastings, on the other hand, didn’t give up and reached out to Capehart on Facebook six months later. This time, the 54-year-old requested a “photo,” just like any other journalist. The matchmaker introduced the two guys in a combined message once he spotted Schmit in the photos and approved of what he saw. The Carleton College graduate was instantly pleased with Schmit’s mastery of English through instant chats — he observed that his now-husband understood the difference between “your” and “you’re” and “its” and “it’s.” Schmit, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised to realize that the person he had seen on television was self-effacing and personable.
Jonathan Capehart and Nick Schmit Were Soon Having Fun Dates
Capehart then found himself in a scenario where he had two dates in quick succession after originally refusing to go on a date with Schmit.
During their dates, they discussed a variety of things, ranging from their 13-year age difference to where they had their hair cut to exchanging their political ideas. Capehart ultimately offered Schmit a key to his flat two years after they started dating.

When marriage equality became legislation in the United States in 2015, The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart host’s pals inquired as to when he planned to propose to his girlfriend. Soon after, Capehart visited Schmit’s family at their lake cabin in Ottertail, Minnesota, followed by a surprise proposal in Positano, Italy, in 2016.
Wedding Details
The wedding of Capehart and Schmit took place on January 7 at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington, D.C. Schmit allegedly read his vows first, pledging to adore his “best friend” in “the brightest and darkest days.” Capehart subsequently recited the words to the song “That’s All” as he took his vows.
