Lovely Mimi had a difficult childhood; she spent her early years in Vietnam in a refugee camp before her parents fled to the United States and settled in Silver Springs. Her family lived in a one-bedroom apartment; her father was a pastor in Vietnam but died in 2014. Mimi has five sisters and a brother; her oldest sister is still in Vietnam, and Mimi has only met her once.
They were poor, old-fashioned, and kids often teased Mimi because of her appearance – all of which caused Mimi to rebel against her parents, starting drinking, running away from home, and getting into trouble.
