Marsch began playing soccer in college. He started his career at Princeton University, where he scored 16 goals as a midfielder and forward. In terms of his professional career, he was drafted in the third round by D.C. United. In his two seasons there, he only appeared in 15 games. Marsch quickly became a fixture in Chicago’s lineup, where he remained until 2005. He was instrumental in the Fire’s MLS Cup victory in 1998, giving him three league titles in three years. He also won the U.S. Open Cup three times (1998, 2000, and 2003) with Chicago.

Furthermore, after the 2005 season, Marsch was traded to Chivas USA, where Bradley was coaching. Marsch is one of only 14 players to have appeared in all 14 seasons of Major League Soccer. On February 5, 2010, he announced his resignation from Chivas Regal after four seasons to pursue a coaching career.

For two years, Marsch was a United States national team member. He made his debut as a substitute in a scoreless World Cup qualification match against Trinidad and Tobago on November 11, 2001; on June 2, 2007, he made his second appearance in a 4–1 friendly victory against China in San Jose, California.

Following his retirement, Marsch became an assistant coach for the United States men’s national team under Bob Bradley, his old college and club coach. Marsch remained with the U.S. program until Bradley’s dismissal in July 2011.
