Martin began working as a freelance sports journalist in 1986. After that, he went to work for the BBC, where he stayed until 1999. He interviewed Diana, Princess of Wales, for the BBC’s Panorama show in November 1995 about her failed marriage to the Prince of Wales. The show was watched by nearly 23 million people in the United Kingdom. At the time, the BBC hailed it as the scoop of a generation.

Similarly, he began working on special documentary shows for ITV in 1999. While working at ITV in 2003, Bashir conducted a series of interviews with American musician Michael Jackson for the documentary Living with Michael Jackson. In the same year, he produced “Major Fraud,” a documentary about British Army major Charles Ingram, who attempted to swindle his way to the prize money in an unaired Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? episode.

Martin relocated to New York in 2004 to further his career. He worked for ABC, where he hosted the late-night news show “Nightline.” After working for ABC for a few years, he left in 2010 to join MSNBC. He was a political commentator and host of his own show, “Martin Bashir.” He did, however, resign from NBC on December 4, 2013. Martin rejoined BBC News as a religious affairs correspondent in late 2016. He left the BBC on May 14, 2021, after about five years of service.
