Taylor Goldsmith, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and principal composer of the American folk-rock band Dawes, was born on August 16, 1985. He grew raised in Southern California and went to Malibu High School, where he met Blake Mills. Taylor’s father, Lenny Goldsmith, was a musician who toured in the 1980s as the lead vocalist of the R&B and funk band Tower of Power. In 2002, he and Blake Mills founded the post-punk band Simon Dawes, which a few bassists and drummers later joined. Carnivore, their first album, was released in 2006 to mediocre reviews. The band then disbanded in 2007.
After that, he created the band Dawes with former bandmate Wylie Gelber and his brother Griffin Goldsmith. Their first album, North Hills, was a big success, and the band’s roster shifted throughout the following four years. Taylor later formed Middle Brother with Matt Vasquez and John McCauley in 2010. Middle Brother, the band’s first and only album, was released in 2011 and got excellent reviews. T Bone Burnett, the producer, then requested the 36-year-old to join The New Basement Tapes in 2014. During the recording sessions for their album Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, he collaborated with Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. Goldsmith has also worked as a session musician, appearing on albums by Jackson Browne, Dave Rawlings, and Sara Watkins, among others. In addition, he has written and co-written songs for other bands. In 2013, he released his first album, Dad Country.
In 2015, the Los Angeles County, California native started dating Mandy Moore. They proposed in 2017 and married in November 2018. In February 2021, the couple will have their first child. “One year ago today, I went into labor, and I’m gazing back at my doula @ccmeyer’s wonderful images that captured everything.” I’m experiencing all of the emotions right now. It’s amazing how photos can transport me back in time a year later. I can’t feel the agony anymore, but I remember how intense it was. “It was cracked wide open in the greatest and largest manner conceivable.”
