DJ Steve Aoki has indicated that royalties from his music are nothing compared to the money he would make from selling digital collectibles known as NFTs in 2021. On February 10, the artist talked about his venture into NFTs at a private Gala Music event in Inglewood, California. He said that he gets a lot of money as a DJ and mentioned:
“If I were to actually break it down, alright, in the ten years I’ve been doing music, six albums, and you total all those advances, what I did last year in one drop in NFTs, I earned more money.”
Last year, Steve acquired notoriety in the community after selling his hairy collection for $888,888.88 on Nifty Gateway. He also has several NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. Aoki said in a video clip from the event that NFTs are digital works of art tied to blockchain technology that is altering the music business by incorporating scarcity and a collector attitude comparable to Pokémon cards or limited-edition sneakers. According to Insider, NFTs can upend the music business and provide artists with a potential revenue stream that outweighs the marginal income from streaming services. On the forum, Aoki stated:
“As music NFTs grow more prevalent in how we incorporate and support artists, labels will be required to do more than just include the song on a playlist.”
