Gower was born on April 1, 1957, in Tunbridge, Wells. His father, Richard Gower OBE, worked for the Colonial Service in Dar es Salaam, the capital of the then-British-ruled Tanganyika Territory, where Gower spent his boyhood. When Gower was six years old, his family returned to England when Tanganyika gained independence, landing in Kent and eventually relocating to Loughborough. From the age of eight to thirteen, Gower attended prep school at Marlborough House School in Hawkhurst, where he favored cricket.
He received a scholarship at The King’s School in Canterbury. He took the Oxford University History test and was granted an interview at St Edmund Hall, but he did not get a seat. After turning down a position at University College London, Gower returned to school in an effort to complete two more A levels but dropped out halfway through the year.

Career
In both local and international contests, Gower has one of the most productive first-class cricket careers in English history. From 1975 through 1993, he played domestic cricket, mostly for Leicestershire, until 1989, when he went to Hampshire. He was a regular batsman for both clubs. Gower captained England to victory in the 1985 Ashes; nevertheless, two 5–0 whitewashes against the West Indies (in 1984 and 1985–86) reflected badly on his leadership, and he was removed in 1986. He was temporarily restored for the 1989 Ashes series before being replaced by Graham Gooch as captain.
The pair’s troubled friendship contributed to Gower’s retirement from international cricket in 1993. Despite this, he finished his first-class career with an excellent record of 26,339 runs at an average of 40.08 and 53 centuries. As of February 2021, he held the Test cricket record of 119 straight innings without a duck. Following his retirement, Gower became a popular cricket pundit for Sky Sports, and he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame on July 16, 2009. The ECB nominated him to the country’s best Test XI in honor of England’s 1000th Test in August 2018.
